After a major restoration completed in 2011, the hotel reopened with a historic Palace Wing and a river-view Nile Wing, and in recent years was run as the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract. Its famous 1902 restaurant and its sunset terrace remain beloved. In 2026 the hotel passed to Mandarin Oriental management, continuing to welcome guests in its heritage building while further renovation is carried out — and is set to be relaunched as the Mandarin Oriental Old Cataract. Nearby lies the island temple of Philae, an easy and magical excursion.
