New Cairo is one of Greater Cairo's largest planned developments, built up over the past two decades on the desert plateau east of the city. It's known for gated compounds, wide roads, international schools and universities (including AUC's New Cairo campus), and shopping malls — a different lifestyle from the dense, older districts closer to the Nile.
The area is generally split into the Fifth Settlement (Al Tagamoa Al Khames), which has the highest concentration of compounds, malls, and schools, and satellite communities such as Rehab City, Madinaty, and Katameya further out, each built as a self-contained development with its own amenities.
