Standing amid green gardens in the very shadow of the Great Pyramid of Giza, it offers what may be the most spectacular hotel view in the world. Begun in the 19th century as a royal hunting lodge and transformed into a grand hotel in 1886, it has hosted kings, presidents, and film stars — and even helped shape world history. Today, as the Marriott Mena House, it remains one of Egypt's most storied places to stay.

The building began life in the mid-19th century as a royal rest house and hunting lodge for the khedives, Egypt's ruling family, who came to hunt in the desert near the pyramids. In 1886 it was bought and converted into a luxury hotel, opening as the Mena House — named after Menes, the legendary first king of a united Egypt. Skilled architects added domes, carved screens, and oriental splendour, turning the royal lodge into one of the most romantic hotels in the world.

What sets Mena House apart is its astonishing closeness to the Great Pyramid — it stands almost at the foot of the Giza plateau, so the ancient wonders fill the view from its gardens, pool, and many of its rooms. Generations of travellers have woken to the sight of the pyramids glowing in the dawn light, or dined beneath them in the evening. With its lush gardens and pyramid-facing terraces, it offers a setting no modern hotel could ever recreate — history beside history.

Mena House has hosted an extraordinary cast of guests — royalty, heads of state, and Hollywood stars. It even played a part in world history: during the Second World War it hosted the 1943 Cairo Conference, where leaders including Roosevelt and Churchill met to discuss the course of the war. In later decades it was a setting for Middle East peace diplomacy. Now operating as the Marriott Mena House, it carries that grand legacy into the present, a short stroll from the new Grand Egyptian Museum.
