The remains of an ancient Greco-Roman port town near New Alamein — tombs, houses, and columns that reveal a forgotten classical chapter of Egypt's Mediterranean coast.

The El Alamein coast holds more history than its WWII fame suggests. Near New Alamein lie the ruins of an ancient Greco-Roman town and port, sometimes called Marina el-Alamein, where archaeologists have uncovered tombs, houses, and columns dating back over two thousand years. These remains reveal a forgotten classical chapter of the North Coast, adding a layer of deep antiquity to a region now better known for its beaches and modern towers.

The ruins are the remains of a Greco-Roman settlement and port that flourished on this coast around two thousand years ago, in the era when Egypt was part of the classical Mediterranean world. Long buried and largely forgotten, the site was revealed by archaeological excavation, uncovering a town that once traded and lived along the same shore where New Alamein now rises. It is a reminder that this coastline has drawn people to the sea since antiquity.

The architecture reflects the Greco-Roman style of the period, echoing the classical world of the Mediterranean. While more modest than Egypt's great pharaonic monuments, the site offers a fascinating and unexpected glimpse into the everyday classical history of the North Coast.
