Logistics & Trade

A global trade hub at the crossroads of three continents — anchored by the Suez Canal and a fast-growing network of world-class ports and logistics corridors.

Few countries are as naturally suited to trade and logistics as Egypt. Sitting at the meeting point of the Mediterranean and Red Seas — and of Africa, Europe, and Asia — it commands the Suez Canal, through which roughly 10% of all world trade flows. Today Egypt is working to turn that unrivalled geography into far more than a toll booth: a fully integrated platform of ports, free zones, and inland corridors that can manufacture, store, and move goods for the whole region.

A vital artery — and a lesson in resilience.

The Suez Canal is one of the most important shipping lanes on Earth, the shortest sea link between Asia and Europe, and a major source of foreign currency for Egypt. Its revenues hit a record of around $10.2 billion in 2023. Then regional tensions and disruption in the Red Sea led many ships to divert around the Cape of Good Hope, and canal revenue fell sharply — to roughly $4 billion in 2024 — before beginning to recover in 2025. The episode underscored a key lesson Egypt has taken to heart: the canal's future cannot rest on transit fees alone. The country is now expanding port services such as bunkering, ship repair, and logistics, and building industry around the waterway, so its value endures whatever the weather of global trade.

A Corridor of Industry and Logistics

At the centre of this strategy is the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) — a multi-node corridor of ports and industrial parks at Ain Sokhna, East Port Said, and Qantara West. It has attracted confirmed investment contracts of around $13 billion across some 380 industrial, logistics, and port projects, expected to create well over 100,000 jobs, with a target of one million jobs by 2030. Global port operators such as DP World and Abu Dhabi's AD Ports Group are developing major terminals and logistics parks there, drawn by generous incentives including customs and VAT exemptions inside the zone. It links seamlessly to Egypt's wider manufacturing drive, letting companies make and ship goods from a single location beside the world's busiest trade route.

Egypt's seaports handle on the order of 210 million tonnes of cargo and 9 million containers a year. Alexandria and Damietta anchor Mediterranean trade; Port Said and Suez handle canal-linked container traffic; and Ain Sokhna, on the Red Sea, serves as a gateway to inland Egypt and Africa. The next phase of growth is about integration rather than just capacity: a network of dry ports (such as the one at 6th of October), logistics parks, bonded warehousing, and rail-linked freight corridors is being built to move cargo smoothly from quayside to factory and consumer. Booming e-commerce is adding fresh demand for modern warehousing and last-mile delivery across the country.

A Gateway to Three Continents

Location, access, and incentives in one place.

For logistics and trading firms, Egypt offers an exceptional gateway position serving Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Arab world from a single base. It is plugged into major trade agreements — from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and COMESA to deals with the EU and Arab states — giving goods made or handled in Egypt wide, often duty-friendly market access. Add in the SCZone's tax incentives, a large workforce, and a heavy national investment in ports, roads, and rail, and the sector becomes one of the clearest plays in the Egyptian economy. Investors usually engage through the General Authority for the SCZone and the General Authority for Investment (GAFI).
