At the heart of Egypt's New Capital flows a different kind of river — a green one. The Green River Park is a vast ribbon of parks, gardens, lakes, and water features designed to run for around 35 kilometres through the spine of the city, giving the new capital a great central green lung. Inspired by the role the Nile plays in Egyptian life, this enormous landscaped corridor is planned to be one of the largest urban parks anywhere in the world.
A Green Spine ·
A river of greenery.
The Green River is conceived as the central organising feature of the New Capital — a long, continuous corridor of green space and water threading through the city's main districts. Stretching for roughly 35 kilometres, it links the central business, government, and residential areas with parks, lawns, walkways, and landscaped grounds. Just as the Nile is the lifeline of Egypt, the Green River is intended to be the natural heart of the new city, a place for recreation and a symbol of a greener, more liveable urban vision.
Parks, Lakes & Walkways ·
Recreation for the new city.
Along its length the Green River is planned to include landscaped gardens, lawns, artificial lakes and waterways, fountains, and walking and cycling paths, as well as recreational and cultural attractions. The aim is to give residents and workers generous, accessible open green space in a desert environment — a counterpoint to the towers of the business district and the offices of the government quarter — and to help make the capital cooler, greener, and more pleasant to live in.
A Symbol of the New Capital ·
Still taking shape.
As one of the signature elements of the New Capital, the Green River embodies the city's ambition to be a modern, sustainable "smart city." Like much of the capital, it is being delivered in phases and continues to develop and expand. When complete, this immense green corridor — running through the centre of the city alongside its landmark towers, mosques, and ministries — is set to be one of the largest and most distinctive urban parks in the world.
