The Government District

The new seat of Egypt's government — ministries, Parliament, and the Presidential Palace gathered around the central People's Square, operating as the country's administrative heart since 2024.

At the core of the New Capital lies its very reason for being: the Government District, the new home of Egypt's administration. Here, dozens of ministries, the Parliament, the Cabinet, and the Presidential Palace are gathered around a grand central plaza, the People's Square. Since the city was inaugurated as the seat of government, this district has become the working heart of the Egyptian state, with thousands of officials and employees now based in the new capital.

The Government District was built to bring the institutions of the Egyptian state together in one modern, purpose-built quarter. It includes a large complex of government ministry buildings — over thirty in all — alongside the Parliament (House of Representatives), the Cabinet headquarters, and the Presidential Palace. Designed around a central axis and a grand plaza known as the People's Square, the district forms the administrative nucleus of the entire new capital.

The relocation of Egypt's government to the new capital reached a milestone when the city was officially inaugurated as the seat of government, and ministries, parliament, and other key institutions moved their operations there. Today the district is a working centre of administration, with thousands of civil servants based in the new offices and the number of residents and visitors in the city steadily growing. It marks the realisation of the capital's central purpose: relocating government away from the congestion of old Cairo.

The Government District anchors the wider plan of the New Capital, sitting alongside the towers of the Central Business District, the Green River, and the defense complex of the Octagon. While primarily a working government zone rather than a tourist destination, its monumental architecture and central plaza have become symbolic images of the new city and Egypt's vision for its administrative future.
