Tens of billions of dollars pledged in the Suez Canal Zone to turn Egypt's sun and wind into green hydrogen and ammonia — a clean fuel for industry and, potentially, for export.

Egypt hopes its abundant sun and wind can do more than make electricity — they can also make fuel. By using renewable power to split water into hydrogen, the country aims to produce "green hydrogen" and green ammonia, clean fuels for industry and shipping. The Suez Canal Economic Zone has become the focus of this ambition, attracting tens of billions of dollars in pledged investment and positioning Egypt as a potential player in the emerging global clean-fuel economy.

What Is Green Hydrogen?

Clean fuel, made clean.

Green hydrogen is made by using renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, producing a clean fuel with no carbon emissions. The hydrogen can be used directly or combined into green ammonia, which is easier to ship. With its excellent solar and wind resources, Egypt is unusually well placed to make green hydrogen cheaply, and studies suggest it could become one of the lowest-cost producers in the world.

A magnet for investment.

The Suez Canal Economic Zone, with its ports and access to shipping routes, has been chosen as the centre of Egypt's green-hydrogen drive. International developers have signed a string of agreements there, with tens of billions of dollars in pledged investment, to build plants producing green hydrogen and ammonia. Egypt's national strategy aims to capture a meaningful share of the future global hydrogen market, making this one of the most ambitious parts of its clean-energy plans.

A pragmatic shift.

Green hydrogen also faces real challenges, and Egypt's approach has matured. Early hopes centred on large exports to Europe, but slower-than-expected European demand and high costs have pushed a more pragmatic focus on domestic industrial use — such as cleaner fertiliser and steel — while export projects develop. Diverting renewable power to hydrogen also competes with the grid's own needs. Egypt's hydrogen story is thus one of huge potential tempered by the practical hurdles of a young global industry.
