A landmark collection from Alexandria's Hellenistic and Roman golden age — statues, coins, and treasures from the era when the city was a capital of the ancient world, freshly restored.
When Alexandria was one of the great capitals of the ancient world — a dazzling centre of Greek and Roman culture — it produced art and treasures of extraordinary richness. The Graeco-Roman Museum gathers the finest of them. One of Egypt's oldest museums, recently reopened after a long and careful restoration, it offers an unrivalled journey into the Hellenistic and Roman age that made Alexandria legendary, where Greek, Roman, and Egyptian worlds met and merged.

Dedicated to a golden age.
Founded in 1892, the Graeco-Roman Museum is one of the oldest museums in Egypt, created specifically to celebrate Alexandria's Hellenistic and Roman heritage. It holds tens of thousands of objects from the centuries when the city, founded by Alexander the Great and ruled by the Ptolemies and then Rome, was a world capital of trade, learning, and art. Few collections anywhere capture so vividly the brilliance of that lost golden age.

The collection is rich and varied: marble and bronze statues, including images of the god Serapis; delicate Tanagra terracotta figurines; ancient coins minted in the city; mosaics; and mummies and funerary art that fascinatingly blend Egyptian and Greek styles. Together they show Alexandria as a true melting pot, where the gods, art, and customs of different civilisations mixed to create something entirely new — the distinctive culture of Graeco-Roman Egypt.

Beautifully back in action.
For many years the museum was closed for a major renovation, a long-awaited project to restore both the building and its displays. It reopened in 2023, beautifully renewed, allowing visitors once again to explore its world-class collection in fitting surroundings. The reopening returned one of Alexandria's essential museums to the city, and it pairs naturally with the nearby Pompey's Pillar and Roman Amphitheatre for a full immersion in ancient Alexandria.
