The Temples of Giza

Each great pyramid was the heart of a sacred complex — linked to the Nile by a long causeway running between a valley temple at the river's edge and a mortuary temple at the pyramid's foot.

A pyramid was never meant to stand alone. Each of Giza's great pyramids was the centrepiece of an elaborate sacred complex, designed to carry the dead pharaoh from the world of the living into the afterlife. A long ceremonial causeway linked a temple down at the edge of the Nile to another at the foot of the pyramid itself. Understanding these valley and mortuary temples, and the causeways between them, reveals the pyramids not as isolated tombs but as the climax of a grand religious stage.

A Sacred Procession ·

The Pharaoh’s Last Journey

From the river to the tomb.

Each pyramid complex followed the same sacred plan. The pharaoh's body would arrive by boat at a valley temple near the Nile, where purification and funerary rites began. It was then carried up a long, enclosed causeway to the mortuary temple at the base of the pyramid, where the final ceremonies took place before burial within the monument itself. This procession — river, valley temple, causeway, mortuary temple, pyramid — traced the king's journey from earthly life into eternal afterlife.

The valley temples stood at the edge of the cultivation, where the desert met the Nile floodplain, serving as the grand entrance to each complex. By far the best preserved is the Valley Temple of Khafre, a breathtaking structure built from enormous blocks of red granite, its austere halls once holding statues of the king. Standing beside the Great Sphinx, it gives visitors today the clearest sense of the monumental beauty of these riverside temples.

At the foot of each pyramid stood the mortuary temple, where priests carried out daily offerings and rituals to sustain the dead king's spirit for eternity. Linking it to the valley temple was the causeway — a long covered corridor, some once richly decorated with carved reliefs. Though many of these temples and causeways now survive only as foundations, their layout is still clear on the plateau, and they transform the way we understand the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.
