The complete treasures of the boy king — over 5,000 pieces — shown together for the very first time since their discovery in 1922.
The crown jewel of the Grand Egyptian Museum is its Tutankhamun Galleries — and for good reason. For the first time since Howard Carter discovered the boy king's tomb in 1922, the entire collection of over 5,000 objects is displayed together in one place, in purpose-built galleries that tell the full story of his life, death, and journey to the afterlife. From the legendary golden mask to gilded shrines, chariots, and jewellery, it is the most complete display of a single pharaoh's treasures ever assembled.
The Complete Collection ·
Over 5,000 objects in one place.
When Carter opened Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922, he found it packed with thousands of objects. For a century, only part of that hoard could be shown at once. Now the GEM displays the complete collection — more than 5,000 artefacts — side by side in dedicated galleries. Many pieces had never been publicly exhibited before, and seeing the entire treasure assembled, exactly as it was meant to equip a king for eternity, is an experience available nowhere else on Earth.
Treasures of the Boy King ·
Masterpieces of the ancient world.
The galleries brim with wonders: the famous golden funerary mask, inlaid with lapis lazuli and precious stones; the great nested gilded shrines that once enclosed the king's sarcophagus; his chariots, thrones, beds, weapons, and exquisite jewellery; and intimate everyday items such as sandals and fans. Displayed with modern lighting and rich interpretation, the objects reveal both the dazzling craftsmanship of Egypt's 18th Dynasty and the personality of the young ruler who owned them.
The Story of Tutankhamun ·
From boy king to global icon.
Unlike older displays that simply lined up objects in cases, the GEM galleries are arranged as a narrative, walking visitors through Tutankhamun's royal lineage, his daily life and ceremonies, his beliefs, and the dramatic 1922 discovery of his tomb. The result is a far richer encounter with a pharaoh who ruled for only a few years as a teenager, yet — thanks to his untouched tomb — became the most famous king of ancient Egypt and a symbol of its treasures the world over.
Visiting the Galleries ·
The highlight of any GEM visit.
The Tutankhamun Galleries are the highlight for most visitors, so they can be busy — arriving early in the day helps. Entry to the museum is by timed online ticket, and photography rules are stricter here than elsewhere: in the Tutankhamun Galleries, only mobile-phone photography is generally allowed (no professional cameras, flash, or tripods), to protect the delicate artefacts. Allow plenty of time — these galleries alone reward a slow, careful visit.
