The Grand Staircase

A monumental ascent lined with royal statues and sphinxes, rising to a vast window that frames the Pyramids of Giza themselves.

Rising from the Grand Hall, the Grand Staircase is one of the museum's most theatrical spaces — a monumental, six-storey ascent lined with dozens of towering statues of pharaohs, gods, and sphinxes. As you climb, you move symbolically through the ages of ancient Egypt, surrounded by masterpieces in stone. And at the very top waits the most breathtaking reward of all: a colossal window that frames the Pyramids of Giza on the horizon.

The staircase is effectively a gallery in its own right, lined with around six dozen monumental works — colossal statues of kings, deities, sphinxes, sarcophagi, and architectural fragments. They are arranged so that, as visitors ascend, they pass through grand themes of ancient Egyptian life: kingship, the gods, and the journey to the afterlife. Many of these pieces are masterpieces in their own right, and seeing them rise around you as you climb gives an overwhelming sense of the civilisation's scale and ambition.

Ascending Through Timeصعودٌ عبر الزمن

A journey woven into the architecture.

The ascent rises through roughly six levels, connecting the entrance hall below to the main galleries above. The climb is part of the experience by design — a slow, dramatic build-up that mirrors a procession through history. For those who prefer, escalators run alongside, but most visitors take the steps to savour the statues at eye level. The architecture itself, all light and clean stone, keeps the focus on the ancient treasures that flank the way.

The climax comes at the summit. There, a vast glass window frames the Pyramids of Giza in the distance, deliberately aligned so that the ancient wonders form the perfect backdrop to the modern museum. After ascending past statues of Egypt's greatest kings, visitors arrive to find those kings' actual monuments — the pyramids themselves — shimmering on the horizon. It is one of the most photographed and moving moments in the entire museum.
