The Grand Egyptian Museum is not only an indoor experience. Its grounds are a destination in themselves — open-air sculpture gardens, shady palm gardens, and stepped terraces landscaped across the vast site. Best of all, the whole complex was designed with one spectacular backdrop in mind: from the terraces and great windows, the Pyramids of Giza rise on the horizon, framing the museum in the most fitting setting imaginable.

Even before stepping indoors, visitors are met by ancient art. The grounds include a sculpture garden where large statues and archaeological pieces stand in the open air, alongside the striking Hanging Obelisk in the forecourt. These outdoor displays let monumental works be seen in natural light and from every angle, and make the approach to the museum an experience in itself — a gentle, grand prelude to the treasures waiting inside.

The landscaping softens the museum's vast scale with greenery. A palm garden offers shaded walking paths and places to sit, while terraced gardens step up behind and around the building, giving elevated viewpoints across the grounds. With cafés, open plazas, and gardens to wander, the grounds are designed for visitors to pause, relax, and take in the setting — a welcome breath of air between the indoor galleries.

The museum stands only about two kilometres from the Pyramids of Giza, and it was deliberately positioned and aligned so that the ancient monuments crown the view. From the upper terraces and the great window atop the Grand Staircase, the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure appear on the horizon, linking the world's newest great museum directly to the world's oldest wonders. At sunset, with the pyramids silhouetted against the sky, the view is unforgettable.
