The grand old museum of Egypt.متحف مصر العريق.
Opened in 1902, the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square is one of the oldest and most famous archaeological museums in the world. Its distinctive pink, neoclassical building was purpose-built to house the nation's antiquities, and for over a hundred years it was the place to see the treasures of ancient Egypt. With more than 170,000 objects spanning thousands of years, its crowded halls — packed with statues, sarcophagi, jewellery, and everyday objects — have a wonderfully old-fashioned, treasure-house atmosphere all their own.

In recent years, Egypt's greatest treasures have been redistributed among magnificent new museums. The complete collection of Tutankhamun has moved to the vast new Grand Egyptian Museum near the Pyramids, while the royal mummies now rest in the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. Rather than emptying the Tahrir museum, this has given it room to breathe, and it is being refreshed to show its still-immense collection to better effect.
