Petrochemicals turn oil and gas into the building blocks of modern life — plastics, fertilizers, synthetic fibers, and countless other products. Egypt, with its energy resources and strategic location, has made petrochemicals a heavyweight industry and is expanding it rapidly. Around ten major new projects are set to add roughly seven million tons of output a year, reducing the need for imports, feeding other industries, and boosting exports of high-value products.

Petrochemicals take hydrocarbons — Egypt has significant oil and especially natural gas — and transform them into essential materials: plastics, resins, solvents, synthetic fibers, and chemical feedstocks. These in turn supply packaging, construction, textiles, agriculture, and more. As a foundation industry that many others depend on, petrochemicals are a strategic priority, and Egypt has built major complexes to expand its capacity.

A wave of around ten major new petrochemical projects is reported to be set to add roughly 7 million tons of products a year to Egypt's output. This expansion is designed to cut imports of products Egypt currently buys from abroad, save foreign currency, and create high-value exports. Much of this growth is concentrated in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and other industrial hubs, close to ports and feedstock.

By processing its own oil and gas into finished chemicals rather than exporting raw, Egypt captures far more value at home. Petrochemicals supply local manufacturers — from textiles to fertilizers — and earn export revenue.
