To understand how the perfect pyramids of Giza came to be, head south to the older pyramid fields of Saqqara and Dahshur. Saqqara & the First Pyramid · سقارة وأول هرم

At Saqqara, the great necropolis of ancient Memphis, stands the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2670 BC. Designed by the legendary architect Imhotep, it was the world's first large structure built entirely of stone, and the first pyramid — a series of six great stone "steps" rising toward the heavens. It marked a revolution in architecture and ambition, the starting point of the whole pyramid age, and remains the centrepiece of the vast and ancient site of Saqqara and Memphis.
Dahshur & the First True Pyramids · دهشور وأول الأهرامات الحقيقية

At Dahshur, the pharaoh Sneferu — father of Khufu — perfected the form. He first built the Bent Pyramid, famous for the way its angle abruptly changes partway up, where the builders adjusted the design mid-construction. Learning from it, he then raised the Red Pyramid, the first successful smooth-sided "true" pyramid in history. These breakthroughs at Dahshur paved the way directly for the perfection achieved a generation later at Giza.
