A natural ridge that glitters with quartz and calcite crystal — the "jewel of the desert" — on the road between Bahariya and the White Desert.حافّةٌ صخرية طبيعية تتلألأ ببلّورات الكوارتز والكالسيت — «جوهرة الصحراء» — على الطريق بين البحرية والصحراء البيضاء.

On the desert road between Bahariya and the White Desert, a small ridge stops every traveller in their tracks: Crystal Mountain. Far from being an ordinary outcrop, it is formed of natural quartz and calcite crystals that sparkle and shimmer in the sunlight, earning it the nickname "the jewel of the desert." Though modest in size, its glittering rock arch is one of the most beloved photo stops on any Western Desert safari.

Crystal Mountain — known locally as Gebel al-Izzaz — is a natural ridge studded and threaded with quartz and calcite crystals, including a striking natural arch you can stand beneath. When the sun strikes the crystals they catch the light and sparkle, giving the whole formation a magical glitter found nowhere else on the route. It is a remarkable little geological wonder, formed as mineral-rich waters crystallised within the rock over vast stretches of time.

Crystal Mountain sits right on the safari route from Bahariya toward the White Desert, typically visited just after the Black Desert. Guides pull over for travellers to walk around the crystalline ridge, pass beneath its arch, and take photographs as the light dances across the stone. It is a short but memorable stop — a sparkling punctuation mark between the dark volcanic hills behind and the chalk-white sculptures ahead.

Visitors usually spend around fifteen to thirty minutes here — enough to explore the ridge, admire the crystals up close, and capture the arch on camera. Bring sunglasses and a camera, and tread carefully on the delicate rock. Please leave the crystals as you find them: taking pieces is discouraged so the formation stays beautiful for everyone. Because the site is so close to the road, it is one of the easiest desert wonders to enjoy on the way to the White Desert camp.

Crystal Mountain is reached as part of a 4x4 safari from Bahariya Oasis, which lies about 370 km (4–5 hours) from Cairo. As with the rest of this protected desert, travel requires a licensed vehicle and registered guide. It is almost always combined with the Black Desert and the White Desert on a one- to three-day trip, often with an overnight desert camp. The best time to visit is October to April, when the desert days are pleasantly cool.
