Bahariya Oasisواحة البحرية

A green oasis of palm groves and hot springs, home to the Valley of the Golden Mummies — and the gateway to the Black and White Deserts.واحةٌ خضراء من بساتين النخيل والينابيع الساخنة، موطنُ وادي المومياوات الذهبية — وبوّابةُ الصحراءين السوداء والبيضاء.

About 370 kilometres southwest of Cairo, the green depression of Bahariya breaks the desert with palm groves, fruit orchards, and bubbling hot springs. The closest of Egypt's five Western Desert oases to the capital, it is the classic launch point for desert safaris into the Black and White Deserts. But Bahariya is a destination in its own right too, holding one of Egypt's most astonishing finds — the Valley of the Golden Mummies — along with ancient temples, painted tombs, and a relaxed oasis way of life.

Bahariya sits in a large depression — roughly 95 km long — ringed by basalt cliffs and filled with date palms, olive and citrus groves. Its main town is Bawiti, home to the local Wahatiyya community with their own traditions. The oasis is famous for its many natural hot and cold springs, fed by a deep aquifer and rich in minerals; favourites for a soak include the palm-fringed Bir El-Ghaba and the cooler Bir El-Mattar, best enjoyed at sunset. After a long day in the dunes, these warm waters are a beloved desert ritual.

A Glittering Discoveryاكتشافٌ متلألئ

One of Egypt’s great modern finds.من أعظم اكتشافات مصر الحديثة.

In 1996, archaeologists uncovered an enormous Greco-Roman cemetery here, the Valley of the Golden Mummies. Hundreds of beautifully preserved mummies were found — many adorned with gilded masks and elaborate decoration — and ground radar has suggested the site may hold as many as 10,000 in all. The discovery revealed how wealthy and well-connected Bahariya was in Greco-Roman times. A small museum in Bawiti displays a selection of the gilded mummies and artefacts, a dazzling introduction to the site.

Layers of history across the oasis.طبقاتٌ من التاريخ عبر الواحة.

Bahariya's past stretches back millennia. It holds the Temple of Alexander the Great — the only temple in Egypt confirmed to have been built by Alexander himself — and the superbly painted 26th-Dynasty tombs of Bannentiu and Zed-Amun-ef-ankh, among the best-preserved private tombs outside Luxor. For a memorable finish to the day, travellers climb English Mountain (Gebel al-Ingleez), a former British WWI lookout, for sweeping sunset views over the palm groves, or watch migratory birds gather at the oasis's salt lakes.

For most travellers, Bahariya is the base camp for the Western Desert. From here, 4x4 safaris set out into the Black Desert, the glittering Crystal Mountain, and the surreal White Desert, often camping overnight beneath the stars. Bahariya is about a 4–5 hour drive from Cairo; many visitors come on two- to three-day trips that combine the oasis sights with a desert overnight. The best time to visit is October to April.
