Its galleries trace the rich heritage of Egypt's Christians — the Copts — through textiles, icons, manuscripts, woodwork, and sculpture. Founded in 1908, the Coptic Museum gathers the largest collection of Coptic art anywhere in the world, with many thousands of objects. Its rich holdings include early Christian textiles, icons, illuminated manuscripts, frescoes, carved woodwork, metalwork, and stone sculpture, drawn from churches and monasteries across Egypt. The museum building itself is a delight, decorated with beautiful carved wooden ceilings and screens (mashrabiya), creating an atmospheric setting worthy of the treasures it holds.

What makes Coptic art so fascinating is that it stands at a crossroads of cultures. The museum also famously holds some of the Nag Hammadi codices, a celebrated collection of early Christian texts, giving it global importance for the study of religious history.
