The museum occupies a graceful early-20th-century palace, once a wealthy merchant's residence, beautifully restored to house the collection and opened as a museum in 2003. Its setting is part of its charm: visitors explore the city's history while moving through the elegant rooms and staircases of a historic Alexandrian mansion. The result is an intimate, manageable museum that tells a big story in a beautiful and very Alexandrian setting.

The collection of around 1,800 artifacts is arranged to trace Alexandria's history chronologically, floor by floor: Pharaonic antiquities below, the rich Graeco-Roman age that made the city famous on the main floor, and the Coptic, Islamic, and modern eras above. Among the highlights are objects recovered from underwater excavations in Alexandria's harbour, where parts of the ancient city — and perhaps the royal quarter of Cleopatra — lie submerged beneath the sea.
