Sohag holds some of Egypt's deepest layers of history side by side — the sacred pharaonic temple of Abydos, the early Christian White and Red Monasteries near Akhmim, and Akhmim's own centuries-old weaving tradition, all along a quiet stretch of the southern Nile Valley.
