Egypt as a Regional Power Hub

A web of new electricity interconnectors — to Saudi Arabia, Libya, Jordan, Sudan, and a planned undersea cable to Europe — aiming to make Egypt a crossroads for power between three continents.

Egypt's ambitions go beyond powering itself — it wants to become a hub that trades electricity across borders. Sitting at the crossroads of Africa, Asia, and Europe, the country is building a web of high-voltage interconnectors to its neighbours and planning undersea cables to Europe. The goal is to import and export power as needed, sell its surplus clean energy abroad, and position Egypt as a strategic link in the electricity networks of three continents.

Egypt has built and is expanding several electricity interconnectors with its neighbours. A long-standing link with Jordan is being upgraded; lines to Sudan and Libya are set to grow substantially; and a major new high-voltage interconnection with Saudi Arabia — one of the largest of its kind, designed to exchange around 3,000 MW — is under way. These links let the countries share power, balancing surpluses and shortages across the region and improving reliability for all.

The boldest plans reach across the Mediterranean. The proposed GREGY interconnector would lay an undersea cable to carry around 3,000 MW of renewable power from Egypt to Greece and the EU, backed by European investment and targeted for the end of the decade. A further link to Italy has also been studied. If built, these cables would let Egypt export its abundant solar and wind energy directly to European markets, turning its clean-energy potential into export earnings.

Taken together, these interconnectors aim to make Egypt a genuine regional power hub, linking the electricity grids of the Arab world, Africa, and Europe through its territory. Combined with its growing renewable generation and storage, this connectivity could let Egypt both strengthen its own energy security and earn revenue by trading clean power — an ambitious vision still being built link by link.
