Along the Gulf of Aqaba in northern Sinai, far from the bustle of Sharm El-Sheikh, lie the quiet shores of Nuweiba and Taba. Nuweiba is a small, laid-back coastal town famous for its simple beach camps — clusters of palm-roofed huts right on the sand, run in the easy-going style beloved by backpackers and those seeking peace. Set against a backdrop of desert mountains, it offers gentle snorkelling, warm calm water, rich Bedouin culture, and some of the best stargazing in Egypt. Nuweiba is also a ferry port, with boats crossing the Gulf of Aqaba to Aqaba in Jordan — a handy gateway for travellers combining Egypt with Petra.

At Sinai's far north-eastern tip, near the border, Taba offers a more developed but still tranquil escape. The resort complex of Taba Heights brings together hotels, a marina, and a golf course on a dramatic mountain-backed shore. Nearby is the stunning Fjord Bay, a sheltered lagoon ringed by cliffs, and offshore lies Pharaoh's Island, crowned by a restored fortress of Saladin. From Taba's heights, on a clear day, you can see the meeting point of four countries across the Gulf of Aqaba.
