In a country where water is scarce, growing food under glass and plastic makes powerful sense — and Egypt has embraced it on a massive scale. The National Greenhouses Project is one of the largest protected-agriculture schemes in the world, building tens of thousands of greenhouses to grow vegetables and other crops with dramatically less water than open fields. It is a key part of Egypt's strategy to produce more food from its limited water resources.

More food, less water.

Greenhouses — known in Egypt as protected agriculture — grow crops inside controlled environments that shield them from heat, pests, and harsh weather. Crucially, they use far less water than open-field farming, since moisture is conserved rather than lost to the desert air and sun. They also produce much higher yields per area and per drop of water, making them ideally suited to a water-poor country like Egypt.

Egypt's national project is enormous: thousands of greenhouses have already been built, with tens of thousands planned in total — one of the largest protected-agriculture programmes on Earth. Concentrated in desert areas near the new cities and reclaimed lands, the greenhouses produce large quantities of vegetables for the home market and for export, adding a high-efficiency, modern layer to Egyptian farming.

The greenhouses fit squarely within Egypt's drive to maximise food from minimum water, complementing efficient drip irrigation and recycled water elsewhere. By boosting yields while saving water, they help expand food production sustainably even as water grows ever more precious. The National Greenhouses Project is a flagship of Egypt's modern, resource-smart approach to feeding its people.
