Northeast of central Cairo lies Heliopolis — in Arabic, Masr el-Gedida, "New Egypt" — one of the city's most elegant and distinctive districts. It was created from the desert in the early 20th century by the Belgian industrialist Baron Édouard Empain, who dreamed of a luxurious garden suburb. With its broad avenues, graceful arcaded buildings in a unique architectural style, and the fantastical palace the Baron built for himself, Heliopolis remains one of Cairo's most charming and historic neighbourhoods.

Heliopolis was founded around 1905–1906 by the Belgian Baron Édouard Empain, an industrialist who envisioned a glamorous new garden suburb in the desert outside Cairo. Laid out with wide, tree-lined avenues, parks, and modern amenities, it was designed as an elegant "oasis" for a cosmopolitan elite, connected to the city by tram. Its Arabic name, Masr el-Gedida — "New Egypt" — captured its modern, forward-looking spirit, distinct from the ancient city of the same name (Heliopolis, "City of the Sun") that once stood in the area.

Heliopolis is famous for its distinctive architecture, a graceful blend of European and Islamic and Moorish influences, giving its grand arcaded apartment blocks and villas a unique, harmonious look. Its showpiece is the extraordinary Baron Empain Palace — a fantastical mansion inspired by Hindu temples and the temples of Angkor Wat, recently restored and opened to the public. Landmarks like the great Basilica and the elegant boulevards complete a district of real architectural character and charm.

Today Heliopolis is a bustling, well-loved part of greater Cairo, still prized for its handsome architecture, leafy streets, shops, and cafés. It has also become an important administrative area, home to major government and presidential sites. Though the city has long since grown out to surround and absorb it, Heliopolis retains its own distinct, elegant identity — a graceful early-20th-century vision that remains one of Cairo's most attractive neighbourhoods.
