Egypt's southernmost and largest governorate by area, Aswan has guarded the country's frontier with Nubia and Sudan since antiquity. Its granite quarries supplied obelisks for temples across Egypt, and today Lake Nasser — created by the Aswan High Dam — carries cruise ships past the relocated temples of Abu Simbel and Philae.

أسوان أقصى محافظات مصر جنوبًا وأكبرها مساحة، وحرست حدود البلاد مع النوبة والسودان منذ القدم. زوّدت محاجرها الجرانيتية المعابد في أنحاء مصر بالمسلات، واليوم تحمل بحيرة ناصر — التي أنشأها السد العالي — سفن الرحلات النيلية بجوار معبدي أبو سمبل وفيلة المنقولين.
