The museum's chronological heart — galleries telling Egypt's story from prehistory to the Greco-Roman age, arranged by era and by theme.

Beyond the headline treasures, the true backbone of the Grand Egyptian Museum is its main galleries — a vast, chronological sweep through more than 5,000 years of Egyptian civilisation. Arranged across a series of grand halls, they carry visitors from the dawn of prehistory, through the great ages of the pharaohs, all the way to the Greco-Roman era. With tens of thousands of artefacts on display, it is the most comprehensive telling of ancient Egypt's story ever gathered under one roof.

A Walk Through Timeمسيرةٌ عبر الزمن

From prehistory to the Greco-Roman age.

The galleries are laid out chronologically, so a visit becomes a walk through the entire span of ancient Egyptian history. They begin in prehistory and the Early Dynastic age, move through the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms — Egypt's golden eras of pyramids, temples, and empire — and end in the Greco-Roman period. Following the galleries in order lets visitors actually feel the rise, flowering, and transformation of one of humanity's greatest civilisations.

A clever system for a vast collection.

To make sense of such an enormous collection, the museum uses an ingenious grid system. As you move forward in time through the eras, each period is also explored through recurring themes — society, kingship, and beliefs (the gods). This means visitors can follow the whole timeline, or trace a single thread — say, how kingship or religion changed across the ages. It turns a huge display of objects into a clear, rewarding story that anyone can follow.

Statues, sarcophagi, and daily life.

The main galleries are filled with tens of thousands of artefacts: colossal royal statues and delicate jewellery, painted coffins and sarcophagi, tools, papyri, and objects of everyday life that bring ordinary ancient Egyptians vividly to life. Many treasures that were once crowded into the old Egyptian Museum now have the space and lighting to be properly appreciated. Whatever your interest — art, religion, daily life, or royalty — there are masterpieces waiting at every turn.

Plan Your Timeنظّم وقتك

Give yourself hours, not minutes.

The main galleries are vast, and seeing them properly takes time — most guides recommend at least three to four hours for the highlights, and a full day for enthusiasts. Comfortable shoes and a few rest breaks help, as the distances are large. Many visitors find a guide or audio guide invaluable for navigating the scale and picking out the must-see pieces. Whether you follow the full timeline or dip into the eras that interest you most, the galleries reward an unhurried visit.
