Just south of Downtown, along the eastern bank of the Nile, lies one of Cairo's most graceful districts: Garden City. Garden City was planned in the early 20th century following the fashionable "garden city" ideals of the time, which aimed to blend elegant housing with greenery and calm. Its designers laid out distinctively curving, winding streets — a deliberate contrast to the rigid grid of nearby Downtown — to create a peaceful, almost maze-like enclave shaded by trees. Lined with handsome villas and mansions set among gardens, it became one of Cairo's most exclusive and refined residential areas.
