Red Sea Dolphins

Playful spinner and bottlenose dolphins ride the Red Sea's waves, famously gathering at sheltered reefs like Sha'ab Samadai, the beloved 'Dolphin House.'

Of all the Red Sea's wildlife, none brings a bigger smile than its dolphins. Pods of playful spinner and bottlenose dolphins roam these warm waters, riding boat bows, leaping clear of the surface, and gathering to rest at certain sheltered reefs. The most famous of these is Sha'ab Samadai near Marsa Alam — known the world over as "Dolphin House" — where, under careful protection, snorkellers can share the water with wild dolphins in one of the Red Sea's most joyful experiences.

The Red Sea's most celebrated dolphins are the spinner dolphins, named for their spectacular habit of leaping from the water and spinning in mid-air. Living in lively, social pods, they hunt in deeper water by night and gather in sheltered reef lagoons by day to rest and socialise. The larger bottlenose dolphins — the familiar, friendly-faced species — also live in these waters. Both are wonderfully acrobatic and curious, and meeting a pod, whether from a boat or in the water, is pure delight.

Famous reefs of the south and north.

Certain reefs are famous as dolphin gathering places. Sha'ab Samadai, a beautiful horseshoe-shaped reef near Marsa Alam, is the celebrated "Dolphin House," a protected lagoon where spinner pods come to rest and where access is carefully managed to protect them. Further north, Sha'ab el Erg near Hurghada is another well-known dolphin spot. At places like these, with luck and care, visitors can snorkel near wild dolphins in their natural home.

Swimming with Wild Dolphins

A privilege, on the dolphins’ terms.

Swimming near wild dolphins is a magical privilege — and one that must always be on the dolphins' terms. At protected sites, rules limit how many boats and people may enter, and set aside core zones where the dolphins can rest undisturbed. The golden principles are to never chase, crowd, touch, or feed them: stay calm at the surface and let curious dolphins approach you if they choose. Respected this way, these intelligent, free animals often reward snorkellers with close, unforgettable encounters.

Care that keeps the magic alive.

The dolphins' continued presence depends on responsible tourism. Disturbance can drive pods away from the resting reefs they rely on, so protected areas, visitor limits, and respectful behaviour all matter. Choosing operators who follow the rules, and behaving calmly in the water, help ensure that places like Dolphin House stay magical for both the dolphins and the people who come to admire them. These intelligent animals are a treasure of the Red Sea, best enjoyed wild and free.
