Dakhla & Kharga Oasesالداخلة والخارجة

Two remote oases deep in the New Valley, layered with mudbrick towns, ancient temples, early-Christian art, and Roman desert forts — Egypt far off the beaten path.

Deep in Egypt's Western Desert, far south of the famous sights, lie the twin oases of Kharga and Dakhla — the heart of the New Valley. For thousands of years they were vital stops on the great caravan roads linking the Nile to Africa, and their dry desert air has preserved an astonishing wealth of history: Pharaonic and Persian temples, one of the world's oldest Christian cemeteries, Roman desert fortresses, and labyrinthine medieval mudbrick towns. For the adventurous traveller, they offer a quieter, deeper Egypt few ever see.

Kharga, the largest of the Western Desert oases and capital of the New Valley, is rich in monuments. Its greatest is the Temple of Hibis — the best-preserved temple in Egypt from the Persian era, dedicated to the god Amun. Nearby, the Bagawat Necropolis is one of the oldest Christian cemeteries in the world, with hundreds of mudbrick chapel-tombs, some painted with vivid early-Christian frescoes of biblical scenes. Scattered across the desert stand Roman fortress-temples such as Qasr al-Ghweita, Qasr al-Zayyan, and Qasr Dush, guardians of the ancient Forty Days Road to Sudan.

To the west, Dakhla spreads in a belt of palm groves and farmland beneath rose-tinged cliffs. Its jewel is the medieval Islamic town of Al-Qasr, a maze of narrow mudbrick lanes, carved wooden lintels, and an old minaret — a remarkably preserved glimpse of desert town life across the centuries. Dakhla also holds the Roman Temple of Deir el-Haggar, the colourful Roman-era painted tombs of Muzawwaqa, and the Old Kingdom mastaba tombs of Qila al-Dabba, all set among soothing hot springs and traditional villages.

Few places hold so many eras at once. Across these two oases you can trace the Pharaonic, Persian, Greco-Roman, early Christian, and Islamic chapters of Egypt's story, all preserved by the desert's dryness. Their importance came from the caravan routes — above all the Darb al-Arba'een, the "Forty Days Road" — that carried goods, people, and ideas between the Nile Valley and the heart of Africa. Today, far from any light pollution, the same desert offers brilliant starry skies and the deep silence of the Sahara.

Kharga and Dakhla lie deep in the New Valley and are usually visited together, reached via Assiut or Luxor, or as part of the grand Western Desert circuit (Luxor → Kharga → Dakhla → Farafra → Bahariya → Cairo). Plan two to three days or more, as the sites are spread across long distances; a car or guided 4x4 makes exploring far easier. The best time is October to March, when the desert days are mild; summers are extremely hot. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to charming desert eco-lodges.
