Centred on the university city of Mansoura along the Damietta branch of the Nile, Dakahlia is the most populous governorate in the Delta. It played a pivotal role in medieval history when French King Louis IX was captured here during the Seventh Crusade, and today is a hub of agriculture, industry and higher education.
