The Bent and Red Pyramids of King Sneferu — crowd-free, beautifully preserved, and the experiments that perfected the true pyramid. South of Cairo.
About forty kilometres south of Cairo, far from the crowds of Giza, lies Dahshur — a royal pyramid field that is one of the most rewarding and peaceful ancient sites in all of Egypt. Here stand the two great pyramids of King Sneferu, founder of the Fourth Dynasty: the curious Bent Pyramid and the majestic Red Pyramid. Together they tell the story of how Egyptian builders learned, through trial and triumph, to raise the perfect smooth-sided pyramid — the form made famous at Giza a generation later.
The Bent Pyramid ·
The pyramid that changed its angle midway.
The Bent Pyramid is one of the most distinctive monuments in Egypt. It rises at a steep angle, then suddenly changes slope about halfway up, giving it a curious "bent" profile. Most scholars believe the builders, partway through, realised the original angle was too steep and risked collapse, so they reduced the incline to finish it safely — a fascinating glimpse of ancient engineers learning in real time. Remarkably, it still keeps much of its original polished limestone casing, lost from almost every other pyramid, hinting at how dazzling these monuments once looked.
The Red Pyramid ·
Egypt’s first successful smooth-sided pyramid.
A short distance away stands the Red Pyramid, named for the reddish hue of its limestone. Built by Sneferu after the Bent Pyramid, it is widely regarded as Egypt's first successful true, smooth-sided pyramid — and the third-largest pyramid in the country, after the two great pyramids of Giza. Its gentle, stable angle (learned from the Bent Pyramid) became the template for all that followed. Visitors can descend into its interior chambers, with their soaring corbelled ceilings, usually in blissful quiet compared with the busier sites near the capital.
Birthplace of the True Pyramid ·
The road that led to the Great Pyramid.
Dahshur is, in a real sense, where the classic pyramid was perfected. King Sneferu was the father of Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid, and the lessons learned at Dahshur — corrected angles, solid construction, smooth faces — were carried straight to Giza. The site also holds later monuments, including the ruined mudbrick Black Pyramid of Amenemhat III from the Middle Kingdom. As part of the Memphis necropolis, Dahshur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, prized for its role in the very evolution of pyramid building.
Visiting ·
A peaceful trip near Saqqara and Memphis.
Dahshur lies about 40 km south of Cairo, just beyond Saqqara, and is easily reached by car or taxi. Its great advantage is the calm: you can often explore and even enter the Bent and Red Pyramids with very few other visitors around. It pairs perfectly with Saqqara and the ancient capital of Memphis for a full day of pyramids and history away from the crowds. Bring water, a hat, and a small torch for the interior passages, which can be steep and warm.
