Food security is not only about land crops — it is about protein too, and Egypt has built the largest fish farm in the Middle East to provide it. The Berket Ghalioun project, on the coast of Kafr El-Sheikh, is a vast aquaculture "city" of more than a thousand ponds, hatcheries, and processing plants. Producing huge quantities of fish and shrimp, it has dramatically boosted Egypt's home-grown seafood supply and helped make the country a leader in African aquaculture.

Berket Ghalioun is the largest fish farm in the Middle East, sprawling across thousands of feddans on the coast of Kafr El-Sheikh. It is effectively an integrated aquaculture city, with well over a thousand fish and shrimp ponds, hatcheries producing fingerlings and shrimp larvae, feed plants, ice factories, and fish-processing and packaging facilities — everything needed to raise, harvest, and supply seafood at enormous scale, all in one place.

The farm produces large quantities of fish and shrimp — including substantial shrimp output that had previously relied on imports. By supplying a major share of domestic seafood, it strengthens Egypt's food security and helps keep fish, a key affordable protein, available to the population. Egypt is already the leading aquaculture producer in Africa, and projects like Berket Ghalioun have reinforced that position.

Inaugurated as a flagship of Egypt's food-security drive, Berket Ghalioun showed how large-scale, modern aquaculture can complement crop farming in feeding the nation. With its integrated hatcheries, farms, and factories, it serves as a model for further fish-farming projects around the country. It stands alongside the great land-reclamation schemes as part of Egypt's broad push to feed its people from its own land and waters.
