A monumental Fatimid gate guarding the southern edge of medieval Cairo — crowned by twin minarets and climbable today for sweeping views over the old city.بوابةٌ فاطمية مهيبة تحرس الطرف الجنوبي للقاهرة الوسيطة — تتوّجها مئذنتان ويمكن صعودها اليوم لإطلالاتٍ واسعة على المدينة القديمة.
Guarding the southern entrance to the medieval city stands Bab Zuweila, one of the last great gates of Fatimid Cairo still standing. Built over nine centuries ago as part of the city walls, its massive stone towers are crowned by a pair of soaring minarets, and climbing to the top rewards visitors with one of the finest panoramas over the rooftops, domes, and minarets of Islamic Cairo. It is one of the most evocative monuments in the historic city.

Bab Zuweila was built around 1092 as the great southern gate in the walls of the Fatimid city of Al-Qahira. It is one of only three surviving medieval gates — together with Bab al-Futuh and Bab al-Nasr to the north — and the most famous of them. With its massive rounded stone towers flanking a tall arched passage, it formed a powerful and imposing entrance to the city, marking the southern end of the great avenue of Al-Muizz Street.

The twin minarets that crown Bab Zuweila actually belong to the adjoining Mosque of Sultan al-Mu'ayyad, built against the gate in the Mamluk period — a striking marriage of gate and mosque. Today visitors can climb the gate and its minarets, ascending narrow stairs to emerge high above the old city. From the top, the view sweeps across a sea of medieval domes and minarets, the bustling streets far below, all the way toward the Citadel — one of the most memorable vistas in Cairo.
History at the Gate · تاريخٌ عند البوابة
A stage of medieval life.مسرحٌ للحياة الوسيطة.
For centuries, Bab Zuweila was a focal point of city life. As the main southern gate, it was where caravans and processions passed, where royal proclamations were read, and — in the harsher days of the Mamluk sultanate — where public executions were carried out and the heads of rebels displayed as grim warnings. Standing beneath its great towers today, amid the lively streets and workshops, it is easy to feel the weight of the dramatic history this gate has witnessed.
