Once the ancient capital of Thebes, Luxor is often called the world's greatest open-air museum. The temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor rise directly within the modern city on the East Bank, while the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens across the Nile hold the tombs of Egypt's New Kingdom pharaohs.
