Amr Diab was born on 11 October 1961 in Port Said, into a music-loving family; his father worked in the city's shipbuilding industry and nurtured his son's talent from the start. In a story now part of his legend, the six-year-old Amr sang at a local national-day festival and was awarded a guitar by the governor. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in Arabic music from the Cairo Academy of Arts in 1986, having already launched his recording career in 1983 with his debut album. From early on he was an innovator — among the first Arab artists to embrace the modern music video, helping turn songs into glossy visual events across the Middle East.

Diab's great innovation was a fresh, danceable style that fused Egyptian and Arabic melody with Western pop and Mediterranean rhythms. It reached the world in 1996 with "Nour El Ain," a song and album that became a sensation far beyond the Arab world, topping charts and earning him his first international award. Collaborations with global artists such as Algeria's Khaled and Greece's Angela Dimitriou widened his reach further. Critics and fans dubbed the new style "Mediterranean Music," and Diab "its father" — and in doing so he effectively redefined modern Arabic pop for a new generation.

The accolades are unmatched. Diab is the best-selling Middle Eastern artist of all time, a feat recognised by a Guinness World Record, and he has won a string of World Music Awards — more than any other artist from the region. His 2017 album "Leily Nahary" topped the Billboard World Albums chart, a first for an Egyptian and Middle Eastern performer, and in 2024 Rolling Stone named his song "Tamally Maak" the best Arabic pop song of the 21st century. Across more than two dozen albums he has continued to fill stadiums with tens of thousands of fans. Early in his career he also appeared in a few films, including one alongside the legendary Omar Sharif, before devoting himself fully to music.

What sets Diab apart is his sheer staying power. Decade after decade, while musical fashions have come and gone, he has kept releasing chart-topping hits and reinventing his sound, bridging the era of the classical greats and the streaming age. Now in his sixties, he remains one of the most followed and streamed artists in the Arab world, his concerts among the biggest events on the regional calendar. He has also lent his music to charitable and patriotic causes over the years. More than a pop star, Amr Diab is a cultural institution — the enduring soundtrack of modern Egyptian and Arab life.
