Ain Sokhna lies only about 120 kilometres from Cairo — roughly a two-hour drive on a good modern road — making it by far the closest Red Sea coast to the capital and to Egypt's most populous region. This easy access is its great appeal: where a trip to Hurghada or Sharm means a flight or long drive, Ain Sokhna can be reached in a morning. Its name, meaning "hot spring," comes from the warm sulphur springs found in the area.
