Rising in monumental grandeur near the foot of the Citadel, the Mosque of Sultan Hassan is widely regarded as the supreme masterpiece of Mamluk architecture. Built in the 14th century on a colossal scale, it is both a mosque and a great madrasa — a religious college — with towering stone walls, soaring minarets, and a vast central courtyard. Its sheer size and majestic proportions have awed visitors for nearly seven centuries, making it one of Cairo's most magnificent monuments.

A Mamluk Masterpiece · رائعةٌ مملوكية
A mosque and a great school.مسجدٌ ومدرسةٌ عظيمة.
Built between 1356 and 1363 during the height of the Mamluk golden age, this enormous complex served as both a congregational mosque and a madrasa — a college teaching the four main schools of Sunni law, each in its own great hall. Its scale was staggering for its time, and its construction is said to have nearly bankrupted the treasury. Architects and historians have long considered it the finest single building of the entire Mamluk period.
Soaring Architecture · عمارةٌ سامقة
Majesty in carved stone.مهابةٌ في الحجر المنحوت.
The mosque overwhelms with its grandeur. A towering, deeply recessed entrance portal draws visitors into a vast cruciform interior built around an open courtyard, with four immense vaulted halls (iwans) opening from it. The soaring qibla hall and the lofty mausoleum dome behind it are especially magnificent, and its minarets are among the tallest in old Cairo. Every surface shows the confident, monumental artistry of Mamluk stonework at its absolute peak.

A monument not to be missed.أثرٌ لا يُفوّت.
The mosque stands in a dramatic square beneath the Citadel, directly facing the later Al-Rifa'i Mosque, the two forming one of Cairo's most imposing architectural pairings. Visitors can enter to experience the awe-inspiring scale of the courtyard and halls. As at all mosques, modest dress is required and shoes are removed inside. For anyone interested in Islamic architecture, Sultan Hassan is an unmissable highlight of historic Cairo.
