More than 1,200 species of reef fish — many found nowhere else on Earth — fill the Red Sea's reefs with dazzling colour, movement, and life.
If the coral builds the reef, it is the fish that bring it to life. The Red Sea is home to more than 1,200 species of fish, swirling around its reefs in a non-stop spectacle of colour and movement. From shimmering clouds of orange anthias to comical clownfish, regal angelfish, and giant Napoleon wrasse, every dive and even every snorkel is a parade of marine life — and a remarkable number of these fish are found nowhere else in the world.
1,200 Species · 1200 نوع
Astonishing variety on every reef.
With over 1,200 recorded fish species, the Red Sea ranks among the richest reef environments on the planet. On a single dive you might pass through curtains of fish so dense they block the light, drift past solitary giants, and spot tiny gobies hiding in the coral. This sheer abundance — fish of every size, shape, and colour, layered from the shallows to the depths — is a huge part of why the Red Sea is rated one of the world's great diving and snorkelling destinations.
Who You’ll Meet ·
Familiar faces underwater.
Some species are reef celebrities. Clownfish peek from their host anemones, clouds of orange anthias hover over the coral, and butterflyfish and angelfish drift by in dazzling patterns. Parrotfish crunch the coral, huge Napoleon (humphead) wrasse cruise the reef like friendly giants, and groupers, lionfish, moray eels, and triggerfish add to the cast. Larger schools of snapper, fusiliers, and barracuda often gather on the walls — a constant, ever-changing show for divers and snorkellers alike.
Endemic to the Red Sea ·
A sea with its own species.
One of the most fascinating facts about the Red Sea is how many of its fish are endemic — found only here. Because the sea is largely enclosed, connected to the ocean only by a narrow strait, its marine life has evolved in partial isolation, producing a high share of unique species. Some familiar reef fish here are subtly different from their relatives elsewhere, and a number exist nowhere else on Earth — a living signature of this special, semi-isolated sea.
Snorkel or Dive ·
Marine life for everyone.
The wonderful thing about Red Sea reef fish is that you don't need to be a diver to enjoy them. Because so many reefs lie in shallow, clear water close to shore, even snorkellers floating on the surface can watch the full spectacle below. From the house reef of a beach resort to a remote offshore wall, the fish are everywhere — making the Red Sea one of the easiest and most rewarding places in the world to meet a dazzling cast of marine life.
