At its heart, the craft is manual: using a set of specialised tools, the engraver cuts symbols, names, Quran verses, prayers, and geometric patterns into a metal surface. The engraving can be concave (recessed into the metal) or convex (raised in relief), or built up by combining different metals — for example, inlaying silver into copper or brass. The same essential skills apply across gold, silver, and copper, and the marks of the maker's tools are part of the beauty of a hand-worked piece.

• Chasing & repoussé: hammering the metal — from the front (chasing) to sink the design, or from the back (repoussé) to push it up into relief. The two are often combined.
• Engraving / incising: cutting lines and patterns directly into the surface with sharp tools.
• Inlay & overlay: setting one metal into another (such as silver or copper into brass) for contrasting colour and pattern — a hallmark of fine Egyptian and Islamic metalwork.
• Piercing: cutting openwork patterns right through the metal, as seen on lamps and lanterns.
• Motifs: Arabic calligraphy, arabesque foliage, and interlocking geometric designs.

Egypt has one of the great metalworking heritages of the Islamic world. Medieval Cairo produced superb inlaid brassware — trays, ewers, candlesticks, and boxes chased with calligraphy and inlaid with silver — much of it dating from the Mamluk era. That tradition lives on in Khan el-Khalili, the historic bazaar founded in the 14th century, and especially in the Coppersmiths' Alley (Haret al-Nahhaseen), where artisans still hand-beat and engrave copper and brass trays, lanterns, and teapots, and where silversmiths engrave jewellery — including the famous hieroglyphic cartouche name pendants. Many of these workshops are family businesses passed down over generations.

Across the communities that practise it, engraving on metals is a way of expressing cultural, religious, and regional identity, as well as social standing. Engraved objects — jewellery and household pieces alike — are given as traditional wedding gifts, used in religious rituals, and even feature in folk beliefs and "alternative medicine," where certain metals are thought to carry healing or protective power. A hand-engraved object is still prized far above a machine-made one.

In 2023, UNESCO inscribed "Arts, skills and practices associated with engraving on metals (gold, silver and copper)" on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It was a multinational nomination prepared over two years, with Egypt among the ten participating Arab countries (alongside Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Morocco, Mauritania, Palestine, Sudan, Tunisia, and Yemen), coordinated through ALECSO. UNESCO noted that the craft is transmitted within families through observation and hands-on practice, as well as through workshops, training centres, and universities. The listing was Egypt's eighth element on the intangible-heritage lists.
