Cairo's great medieval bazaar — a labyrinth of alleys alive with spice and copper, lanterns and gold, and the buzz of six centuries of trade.
In the heart of Islamic Cairo lies Khan el-Khalili, one of the oldest and most famous bazaars in the world. For more than six centuries, its maze of narrow alleys has been crammed with shops and stalls selling spices, perfumes, copper and brass, gold and silver, lanterns, and every kind of craft. To wander here, haggling and sipping tea amid the colour, noise, and aromas, is to experience the living heart of old Cairo — a market that has barely changed since the Middle Ages.
A Medieval Marketplace ·
A bazaar born in the age of the Mamluks.
Khan el-Khalili was founded in the late 14th century, in the era of the Mamluk sultans, as a great trading hub of caravanserais — the "khans" where merchants stored goods and lodged. For centuries it sat at the crossroads of trade routes carrying spices, silks, and treasures between Africa, Asia, and Europe. That heritage survives in its labyrinth of covered lanes, ancient stone archways, and tiny workshops, where craftsmen still hammer copper and blow glass as their ancestors did generations ago.

The bazaar is a feast for the senses and a paradise for shoppers. Among its treasures are mountains of fragrant spices and perfumes, gleaming copper and brassware, intricate gold and silver jewellery, colourful glass lanterns (fawanees), textiles, leather, antiques, and every kind of souvenir. Bargaining is part of the fun and fully expected — done with good humour and a smile, haggling is a cherished local art. Take your time, compare stalls, and enjoy the friendly back-and-forth that has echoed through these lanes for centuries.
More Than Shopping ·
Cafés, mosques, and timeless atmosphere.
Khan el-Khalili is as much about atmosphere as shopping. At its heart sits the legendary El-Fishawy café, serving mint tea and shisha for well over two centuries and once a favourite haunt of the Nobel-winning writer Naguib Mahfouz, who set many scenes here. All around rise great monuments — the venerable Al-Azhar and Al-Hussein mosques stand close by. Simply sitting with a tea, watching the endless flow of life, is one of the great pleasures of a visit to Cairo.

Khan el-Khalili sits in the heart of Islamic Cairo and is easily combined with the area's great mosques and the Citadel. It is liveliest in the late afternoon and evening, when the lanes glow with lantern-light. Dress modestly, keep an eye on your belongings in the crowds, and don't be shy about haggling — start low and stay friendly. Whether you come to shop or simply to soak up the scene, it is one of the most memorable corners of Cairo.
