Core field crops grown across the country — rice in the water-rich Delta and sugar from cane in Upper Egypt and beet in the north, both staples of the Egyptian kitchen.

Two more staples round out Egypt's core field crops: rice and sugar. Rice thrives in the water-rich northern Delta and is a beloved part of the Egyptian diet, while sugar comes from sugarcane grown in Upper Egypt and sugar beet in the north. Both are vital to the nation's food supply — though rice, being thirsty, sits at the centre of Egypt's careful balancing of crops against its precious and limited water.

A Delta staple.

Rice is a staple of the Egyptian table and a key crop of the northern Delta, where water is most plentiful and helps keep coastal soils healthy. However, rice is very water-intensive, so in a country where every drop counts, the government carefully regulates the area planted to balance food needs against water conservation — at times reducing rice acreage and encouraging less thirsty crops. It is a clear example of the delicate water choices shaping Egyptian farming.

Two sources, one staple.

Sugar comes from two crops: sugarcane, long grown in the warm south of Upper Egypt, and sugar beet, increasingly grown in the north and now a major source. Sugar is an essential everyday staple, and Egypt has invested heavily — including in one of the world's largest beet-sugar plants — to raise output and move toward self-sufficiency, reducing the need for imports of this basic commodity.

Feeding the nation wisely.

Rice and sugar show the balancing act at the heart of Egyptian agriculture: meeting the food needs of a large population while carefully managing scarce water. Through modern irrigation, crop planning, and investment in processing, Egypt works to secure these staples efficiently. Together with wheat and grains, they form the foundation of the country's domestic food supply within its broader agricultural strategy.
