About Abu Simbel · عن أبو سمبل
Carved out of a mountainside in the 13th century BC, the temples are a lasting monument to the king and his queen.
Colossal Statues: The facade of the Great Temple features four colossal 20-meter statues of Ramses II, dedicated to the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah.
Solar Phenomenon: The temple is perfectly aligned so that twice a year (Oct 22 and Feb 22), the sun's rays travel 60 meters inside the sanctuary to illuminate the statues of the gods, leaving Ptah, the god of the Underworld, in darkness.
Queen Nefertari: The smaller temple is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Ramses II's chief consort, Nefertari. Uniquely, the statues of the queen are the exact same size as those of the pharaoh.
The Great Rescue: In the 1960s, the entire complex was carefully cut into massive blocks, dismantled, and reassembled 65 meters higher to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
